How does Geo-Services work?

The Geo-Services feature provides the app user with a variety of alerts based on the user’s physical proximity to the alarm system. Physical proximity is established by setting up a virtual “fence” around the alarm system’s location, and alerts are triggered by passing over the boundary of this virtual fence.

Current features include:

  • Arming reminders: Alerts when the system is armed or disarmed based on entering or leaving the virtual fence
  • Thermostat control: Automatic adjustments to target temperature on a Z-Wave thermostat based on entering or leaving the virtual fence (Z-Wave devices and Premium Control plan required for this feature)
  • Automate Video Recording: On/Off based on entering or leaving the virtual fence (Cameras and Complete 2.0 plan required).

Requirements to use Geo-Services:

  • A Mobile Pro or Total Home monitoring plan.

Currently, the apps for Windows Phone and Blackberry do not include the Geo-Services feature. Work is being done to add this feature.

Add Geo-Devices

To configure Geo-Services, the customer needs to enable Geo-Services on one or more of their phones. To enable Geo-Services, the customer must use the Customer app.

To enable Geo-Services using the Customer app:
  1. Log into the Customer app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Tap Geo-Services.
  4. Tap the Geo-Services toggle switch to enable it.

  5. If asked, tap Turn On to turn on Geo-Services.
  6. Geo-Services is now enabled for the device, and appears as a Geo-Device on the Customer Website.

Manage Geo-Fences

Once Geo-Devices are set up, a Geo-Fence is created. A Geo-Fence is a virtual geographic boundary used for Geo-Services. The default Geo-Fence is the address of the system’s installation location with a radius of one mile. To create or adjust Geo-Fences, the customer must use the Customer Website.

To create or edit a Geo-Fence using the Customer Website:
  1. Log into the Customer Website.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Geo-Services.
  4. To edit a Geo-Fence, click the name of the Geo-Fence to edit under Geo-Fences.
  5. To add a new Geo-Fence, click + Add a Fence.
  6. To move the fence location, either click and drag the location marker on the map, or enter a specific address in the Move fence location to field.

Note: The center of the fence defaults to the system’s installation address.

  7. In the Fence Name field, enter a name for the Geo-Fence.
  8. To adjust the radius, either click and drag the Geo-Fence anchors on the map overlay, or enter the desired radius in the Radius field (in miles).

Note: The minimum Geo-Fence radius is 1 mile (1.6 kilometers), and the maximum is 100 miles (160 kilometers). If the customer’s account is in Canada, the minimum radius is 3 kilometers and the maximum is 150 kilometers.

  9. Click Save.

Add Geo-Services rules and notifications

Once the customer enables Geo-Devices, they can configure desired Geo-Service rules or notifications. Some example of rules are arming reminders, thermostat override, and pausing video recording rules.

To view rules and reminders available to a specific customer’s account:
  1. Log into the Customer Website.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Geo-Services.
  4. In Set up Geo-Features, it lists notification reminders and rules available for the customer’s account to create. Click to select the rule or reminder to create it.
