The three ways to interact with thermostats are by name, by location, or by general device type.

  • To interact by name, use the exact device name in the command.
  • To interact by location, the location must be in the device name.

Example: If the thermostat is named living room thermostat – say, “Alexa, ask to turn my AC on in the living room.”

  • To interact by general device type, use the words “thermostat”, “therm”, “temperature”, or “temp”.

Example: ‘Alexa, ask to set the temp to 71 degrees.” This will only work if there is one thermostat.

The following list of commands is a small subset of the possible things to say to a thermostat.

Example commands:

Note: The example thermostat commands are on a thermostat with the name Living Room Thermostat.

To change the temperature

To set to a specific temperature
  • “Alexa, ask to set the living room thermostat to 75 degrees”
  • “Alexa, ask to heat living room thermostat to 75 degrees”
  • “Alexa, ask to set my thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius”
  • “Alexa, ask to set temperature to 75”
  • “Alexa, ask to set heat to 78 degrees”

Change the mode
  • “Alexa, ask to set the living room thermostat to heat”
  • “Alexa, ask to turn living room thermostat heat on”
  • “Alexa, ask to turn my AC on”
  • “Alexa, ask to turn off the thermostat”

Ask a question

To ask about temperature
  • “Alexa, ask to what is the living room thermostat temperature?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what’s the temperature on the living room thermostat?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what’s the heat set to in the living room?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what’s the temperature?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what is the AC set to?”

To ask about mode
  • “Alexa, ask to what’s the mode of the living room thermostat?”
  • “Alexa, ask to is the living room thermostat on?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what mode is my thermostat in?”
  • “Alexa, ask to what’s the thermostat mode?”

How does mode impact my commands?

  • AC or Heat – The temperature value will be set or increased/decreased to the commanded value.
  • Auto – Adjusting the temperature while in Auto mode will set either the high or low setpoint. It is not possible to change both the mode and the setpoint in one command.

Example: “Alexa, ask to Set thermostat auto mode to 85 degrees” would not work. To do so, change to Auto mode and then set the temperature. For example, “Alexa, ask to Change the thermostat to Auto mode,” followed by “Alexa, ask to Set the low setpoint to 68.”

  • Off – No adjustment commands will work and you will be prompted with what mode you would like to change to.
